Our Work

Our policy and advocacy work taps into the expertise that Start Early (formerly known as the Ounce) has built over its 40-year history as a leader in early childhood program and policy work.

Through administrative and legislative advocacy, we seek to inform, create and strengthen conditions that enable equitable access to high-quality services for our youngest children — prenatal through age 5 — and their families across Washington state.

Legislative Advocacy

Sustaining and bolstering investments in foundational early learning and care programs and strengthening the statutory language that undergrids those programs and related services.

Administrative Advocacy

Informing design and implementation of federal, state and local programs, policies and practices.

We aim to:

  • Strengthen and expand Washington state’s home visiting system
  • Work to increase Washington state’s early learning advocacy and policy capacity by promoting a comprehensive prenatal-to-age 5 system across the state
  • Increase the visibility and voice of early childhood education and advance racial equity in Washington state
  • Partnering with public and private organizations to provide children and families across the state with high-quality early learning opportunities
